Physical Exams Q & A

What are physical exams?

A physical exam assesses your general health. It’s a routine checkup that emphasizes preventive care. You don’t need to be sick or have symptoms to benefit. In fact, you should schedule a physical once a year, regardless of how you feel.

HHC Workers’ Health & Urgent Care offers physical exams to people of all ages but primarily focuses on occupational health, school and sports physicals.

Are there different types of physical exams?

HHC Workers’ Health & Urgent Care offers several types of physical exams, including the following:

  • Work physicals
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals
  • New hire physicals
  • Bus driver physicals
  • Employee health screenings
  • Return to work physicals
  • Sports physicals
  • Driver’s license physicals
  • Human Performance Evaluations (HPE)
  • Respirator fit testing
  • HazMat and HAZWOPER physicals

The providers offer school physicals to patients with children of school age.

What happens during physical exams?

HHC Workers’ Health & Urgent Care tailors physical exams to each patient’s needs and health history. Even so, most visits include the following:

Step one: Review of lifestyle and medical records
Your provider measures and weighs you, checks your vital signs, and asks about your lifestyle, including if you take any medication or supplements, how often you exercise, and whether you smoke or drink alcohol.

Step two: Physical exam
Your provider completes an exam, evaluating each of your body’s systems. They check your skin for abnormalities, feel your abdomen to determine the size and location of your organs, and look in your ears, eyes, nose, and throat. They will also perform a musculoskeletal and neurlogic evaluation.

Step three: Lab work and immunizations
Your HHC Workers’ Health & Urgent Care provider orders lab work, such as blood testing and urinalysis. Then, they review your immunization chart and update any vaccines as necessary. For example, if your job requires you to get an annual flu shot, your provider can administer it during your exam.

Step four: Special testing and/or paperwork
Certain exams, like DOT physicals and respirator fit testing, include specialized screening procedures.

As occupational health specialists, HHC Workers’ Health & Urgent Care is familiar with requirements for various industries and can help you comply with your employer.
